Solar Battery/Storage Breakthrough
A press release from MIT: The key component in Nocera and Kanan's
new process is a new catalyst that produces oxygen gas from water; another catalyst produces valuable hydrogen gas. The new
catalyst consists of cobalt metal, phosphate and an electrode, placed in water. When electricity -- whether from a photovoltaic
cell, a wind turbine or any other source -- runs through the electrode, the cobalt and phosphate form a thin film on the electrode,
and oxygen gas is produced.
Combined with another catalyst, such as platinum, that can produce
hydrogen gas from water, the system can duplicate the water splitting reaction that occurs during photosynthesis. At night, the hydrogen and oxygen can be recombined into a fuel cell to produce a carbon-free electric current that
can power your home or charge an electric car http://www.alternet.org/environment/93842/are_solar%27s_problems_solved/
Al Gore's 10 Year Renewable Power Challenge Gore's
plan to move to 100% renewable and carbon free electircity in ten years. It's a good dirction to start. and more than just
offsetting existing carbon for electric generation, electricity can replace much liquid carbon fuels through plug-in vehicles,
Unfiortunately Gore accepts nuclear power as carbon free, ignoring the carbon rich nuclear fuel cycle. http://www.alternet.org/environment/92260/?page=entire&ses=b1004d1cd2c19cab8b2b6587c216e834
Rate of Arctic Warming May Triple
BOULDER-The
rate of climate warming over northern Alaska, Canada, and Russia could more than triple during periods of rapid sea
ice loss, according to a new study led by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). The findings raise
concerns about the thawing of permafrost, or permanently frozen soil, and the potential consequences for sensitive
ecosystems, human infrastructure, and the release of additional greenhouse gases. http://www.ucar.edu/news/releases/2008/permafrost.jsp
