SNHU Renewable Energy Hedge:

Carbon Emissions Offsets 2007

(Prepared by: Roy Morrison, Director, SNHU Office for Sustainability, 603-496-4260, sustainability@snhu.edu)

Renewable Hedge Size

1.                  Hedge quantity, sized to meet SNHU projected future needs, is approximately  17,500 MWH/yr for 15 years

2.                  Hedge is based on the output of 6.2 MW capacity of 90.75 MW Maple Ridge II, proximate to Lowville, NY in NY-ISO Zone E.

3.                  In an average an average wind year 6.2 MW of Maple Ridge II will mean generation of 17,500 MWH/yr.

4.                  6.2 MW capacity is equal to 6.832 % of Maple Ridge output (6.2 MW/ 90.75 MW).

Carbon Value of Maple Ridge II

1.                  Marginal carbon savings of Zone E from renewable generation is 1.5 lbs carbon dioxide/ kWh. Base load plants in Zone E have greater coal resources than New England.

2.                  Carbon offset/yr= 1.5lbs/kwh x  17,500,000 kHz

 = 13,125 tons carbon dioxide

Carbon Value of SNHU Electricity and Natural Gas Use

1.                  Est. SNHU current use 11,000,000 kHz/yr and 37,000 Decatherms (DT/yr.  NG

2.                  Marginal carbon savings in New Hampshire is 1.1 pounds of carbon dioxide/kHz. Based on ISO-NE July 2007 latest marginal carbon dioxide analysis for NH.

3.                  Carbon dioxide output of natural gas is 120 pounds per DT. Calculated by SNHU Office for Sustainability based on average heating value of DT of NG.

4.                  Total  Current SNHU Emissions to be Offset =

          (11,000,000 kHz x 1.1 lbs CO2/kwh) + 37,000 DT x 120 lbs CO2/DT) =

8250 tons carbon dioxide + 2,220 tons carbon dioxide =

10,470 tons carbon dioxide SNHU for current electricity and natural gas

Current Available Additional Offsets for SNHU Use

1.               Available additional offsets =  Maple Ridge Offsets – SNHU current electric and NG use

= 13,125 tons carbon dioxide – 10,470 tons carbon dioxide

           = 2,655 tons carbon dioxide

  2. SNHU in 2008 will use available additional Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) either to offset other related carbon or to sell and purchase interest in international Clean Development Mechanism carbon dioxide offset projects.
